Hardware Engineering Services within AWS EC2 is looking for a Senior Manager of Applied Science with a background in Machine/Deep Learning and Large Language Models (LLMs). We have one of the largest and richest data lakes in AWS with data on AWS servers, components, their conditions, and changes. Our data science insights and models help unlock billions of dollars of hardware for AWS annually, and prevent countless defective components from reaching our cloud. We provide power forecasting, environment impact modeling, and other insights to the senior leadership of AWS.
Key job responsibilities
You will lead a team of applied and data scientists to detect and classify defects, model optimum hardware repairs, forecast power consumption, and provide deep insights for AWS leadership, hardware engineers, and service providers. We believe that we are yet to tap into the full potential of the insights possible from the hardware data at AWS, and we look for a leader who will set the vision for data science and will develop a three-year roadmap and a strategy to implement that roadmap.
A day in the life
You collaborate with technical and business leaders across hardware engineering and AWS to set priorities for science projects, focus defect prevention efforts, and hardware recovery projects. You guide and mentor scientists in their projects and modeling, and help them grow in their careers.
About the team
The mission of Hardware Engineering Services is to deliver the world's best cloud hardware experience. To accomplish that mission, we need develop accurate models of how hardware behaves under a large number of environmental and load conditions, and how defects surface and can be repaired efficiently. We are part of VMP, a software and science organization within Hardware engineering, which focuses on monitoring, provisioning, managing, testing, and analyzing AWS hardware.

• Masters in Computer Science or a related field.
• 10+ years experience in machine learning, AI, or a related field.
• 5+ years of leading and managing science teams that deliver large impact.
• Expert and hands-on knowledge of machine learning algorithms and techniques.
• Deep experience with large-scale data processing and storage systems.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $196,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $340,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
