Software Development Engineer, Last Mile Planning
DESCRIPTION
At Amazon, the Last Mile Technology organization is responsible for envisioning and developing initiatives in delivering billions of packages to our customers per year as fast and as cost effectively as possible. We utilize multiple delivery methods, business models and delivery station processes to achieve these goals. The Outbound Planning team within Last Mile Technology is responsible for planning routes executed by Amazon delivery partners. They deliver and/or pickup packages through our expanding package delivery and pickup services: Amazon Logistics, AMXL (heavy/bulky), Amazon Shipping (SWA), and Sub-same-day (SSD). Capabilities include selecting shipments and pickups for each planning window, planning efficient sortation, optimally planning packages for dispatch and on-road delivery, and assigning work to the best available driver. Outbound Planning builds or uses science algorithms to ensure a feasible plan is available when packages are known until they have been delivered using various modes of transportation (vans, bikes, walkers, forward nodes, etc.).
An SDE on the Outbound Planning team actively collaborates with members from both within and outside the team including individual contributors, product, project, science and operations stakeholders to deliver desired results. They ideate with stakeholders and translate product requirements to detailed designs, drive alignment on the design with partners, lead implementation and/or mentor other engineers to deliver results and share their designs and learnings in org-wide learning forums. They assist in cross team support and are responsible for holding a high bar on design, code and process contributions from all members. They consistently push the team to meet and exceed operational excellence goals by surfacing issues in code or processes that may impact the availability, performance or maintenance of systems. They can identify high priority work and have good judgement in surfacing issues ahead of time and escalating effectively.
