Software Development Engineer , SandOP
DESCRIPTION
Description
Have you ever ordered a product on Amazon and when that box with the smile arrives you wonder how it got to you so fast? Wondered where it came from and how much it would have cost Amazon? If so, the Amazon Global Supply Chain Optimization team (SCOT) is for you.
We build systems to peer into the future and estimate the distribution of tens of millions of products every week to Amazon’s warehouses in the most cost-effective way. On this team, the forecasts we generate and historical data we gather and transform drive automated downstream systems to make critical buying, labor planning, and inventory routing decisions world-wide. The forecasting platforms we are creating are being sought after by diverse business planning use cases, including unintegrated Amazon subsidiaries.
Amazon seeks a passionate, results-oriented, inventive software engineer to be part of a team of developers building large scale, high availability software systems using mathematical modeling and simulations. We are looking for software engineers who thrive on complex problems and relish the challenge of operating complex and mission critical systems. We strive to solve complex supply chain optimization problems that no one else has solved yet. Do you think you are up to the challenge? Would you like to learn more and stretch your skills and career?
Key job responsibilities
Collaborate with experienced cross-disciplinary Amazonians to conceive, design, and bring innovative products and services to market.
Design and build innovative technologies in a large distributed computing environment and help lead fundamental changes in the industry.
Create solutions to run predictions on distributed systems with exposure to innovative technologies at incredible scale and speed.
Build distributed storage, index, and query systems that are scalable, fault-tolerant, low cost, and easy to manage/use.
Design and code the right solutions starting with broadly defined problems.
Work in an agile environment to deliver high-quality software.
About the team
Within SCOT, our teams own and operate Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) technology used in planning and controlling the flow of quantities of inventory (units), as well as storage space (capacity), and labor constraints (throughput capacity). We generate forecasts and optimize plans using multiple Machine Learning and traditional models, and build operations plans for a variety of different flows, e.g. arrivals, shipments, transfers, or customer returns. We represent these flows at different grains, such as an entire country's supply chain, individual warehouses, or down to the bin level. And each plan covers a specific horizon, and is generated at a set cadence, e.g. daily or weekly. The Integrated Planning Tool (IPT) has a collaborative web-based interface used by thousands of technical and non-technical users, and includes support for manual overrides, Excel integration, and data visualization. Our systems collect and persist the data actuals corresponding to all flows and grains of forecasts, which we use to track accuracy, train models, and re-publish alongside forecasts for both systematic and analytical consumption. Systems downstream of IPT use this data to make automated decisions about buying and placement of inventory, as well as labor hiring. Amazon's Operations leadership uses IPT to help make multi-billion dollar decisions about how to steer the network, particularly around Prime Days and Peak seasons.
