Principal Applied Scientist, Fashion and Fitness Tech
DESCRIPTION
We're looking for a Principal Applied Scientist to join our team. This role will drive our science efforts to understand the customer context (e.g., what have they searched for? what are they clicking on? what have they bought before?), and use that to show customers features that will help them move along their shopping funnel (e.g., ingresses to useful destinations within our store, trending selection that meets their needs).
This role will collaborate closely with the business, product, engineering, and partners from other teams to define a science strategy, and deliver it incrementally. To be successful in this role, you should be a self-started who is customer obsessed and technically broad and deep, with a strong bias for action and desire to deliver results.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- PhD degree in Computer Science, Applied Math, or a related field with strong publications in refereed academic journals/conferences
- 10+ years of combined academic and applied research experience
- 10+ years of hands-on experience developing software in traditional programming languages (C++, Java, Python etc.)
- 7+ years of hands-on experience with ML framework such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn etc.
- Excellent writing skills for presenting business cases and scientific models with rigorous analyses that support results to influence important decisions
- Functional thought leader, sought after for key tech decisions
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience building and deploying innovative machine learning solutions at scale for 10+ years.
- Expert level skills across many Machine Learning methodologies.
- Published research work in academic conferences or industry circles.
- Experience delivering complex end-to-end global ML solutions that run at very large scale.
- Experience working with real-world data sets and building scalable models from big data.
- Thinks strategically, but stays on top of tactical execution.
- Exhibits excellent business judgment; balances business, product, and technology very well.
- An independent thinker who can make convincing, information-based arguments.
- With a strong bias for action, this individual will work equally well with science, engineering, economics and business teams.
- This person will have sound judgment and be able to recruit and develop high calibre talent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $179,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
