Principal Engineer, FTVX Team (Whole World)

Job ID: 2830533 | Amazon Development Center Germany GmbH

DESCRIPTION

This Principal engineer role is responsible for the technologies underlying the domains owned by the Berlin Fire TV Teams. You will work on a wide range of technologies and systems which are on device and in the cloud. These include native (Rust) development, OS and device firmware integration, Android components, Communication technologies (Matter, BLE), mobile app and web, AWS services, and Alexa. All of this is centered on the customer experience of connecting to and configuring streaming media devices to enjoy content quickly, simply, and at the maximum quality level possible (on both Streaming Media Players as well as TVs). The role is responsible for helping the teams achieve greater velocity in delivering customer-facing features, and helping developers invent sustainably for the long-term. This includes simplifying feature development through consolidation and reduction of complexity across different systems, scaling these systems to support fast growth, innovating on new technology and solutions as they apply to our domains, removing bottlenecks, improving reliability and robustness, and re-architecting systems to reduce operational burden and facilitate further invention. Our ideal candidate has a deep, well-rounded technical background in current software disciplines, mastery of software fundamentals, and ability to get buy-in on engineering decisions for the right developer and customer experience, as well as an eagerness to learn new and evolving technologies. The ability to bring others along via knowledge transfer and effective collaboration and communication is highly desirable as well.

Key job responsibilities
Guide developers in design reviews and technical growth opportunities
Identify opportunities for cross-pollination among the Berlin teams (and our Chennai and Sunnyvale partners, to the extent feasible), to simplify development and improve knowledge sharing
Serve as gate-keeper on architecture and design quality bars
Own and drive new projects, delving deep on technology challenges and proposing designs and Proof of Concepts to garner acceptance and funding to deliver to customers
Serve as the go-to technical expert for the Berlin FTV domains

A day in the life
Team has a complex series of challenges to go through, and our scope of responsibility is constantly growing. As a result, we need to get better at managing what we already have, get it to the point where it requires minimal oversight, and invent sustainable solutions to the new challenges we are given. It all starts with you. You are the inspiration. You're looking in dark corners others have forgotten, or are afraid to look. You bring a fresh and can-do perspective to the myriad issues the teams face, and see the common patterns and addressable threads across all.
