Tax Controversy Manager, Tax Controversy
DESCRIPTION
Amazon is seeking a Tax Controversy Manager to join our Tax Controversy Team. The candidate will have a unique opportunity to work with two different teams within the tax department: Tax Controversy and Advertising, while also supporting various leadership initiatives and projects benefiting the entire Global Tax department. The Tax Controversy Team is directly responsible for IRS and other audits in various tax jurisdictions and the Advertising team is responsible for supporting the global Advertising business and a wider group of related stakeholders.
The candidate must be able to operate in a fast-paced, team-focused, dynamic environment with experience in process improvement, collaboration with various stakeholders (within and outside of tax), monitoring activities and controlling the progression of projects, and gathering requirements. Successful candidates will have a background in Tax and experience with project management combined with the in-depth ability to work with large data sets and identify technology solutions to automate current processes.
This role will operate with independence and be expected to demonstrate an ability to collaborate and problem solve.
Key job responsibilities
- Drive process improvements; dive deep into current processes to uncover all critical dependencies and requirements to develop solutions that streamline and automate work streams.
- Perform detailed analysis of large data sets including investigating, troubleshooting and identifying ways to translate the information to leadership, tax authorities, and other stakeholders.
- Leverage technology solutions to create operational efficiencies and standardization. Develop plans to remediate technical debt, manual processes and non-value added time spent by teams.
- Support responding to internal and external information requests, preparing financial audit documentation, and coordinating responses to audit requests from tax authorities.
- Build and maintain relationships with other technology teams within tax, accounting, finance and across Amazon; curate existing solutions and champion implementation to existing audit practices while also identifying gaps and leading efforts to close the gaps on technology needs and solutions.
- Manage and organize large audits and advertising projects leveraging existing tools and processes ensuring all appropriate stakeholders are involved, timelines are managed and communicated, and deliverables are met.
- Prepare and present documents, summaries, and other status updates to stakeholders and leadership on various tax projects, reporting metrics, and gain consensus and approvals.
- Participate in tax technical discussions to gather requirements, prepare documentation, and outline areas of responsibilities and a roadmap to project completion.
- Identify, collaborate and manage relationships with other tax teams, accounting, tech teams, business teams, external auditors, and third-party providers.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of tax, finance or a related analytical field experience
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and applications at an advanced level
- Experience working in a large public accounting firm or multi-national corporate tax department
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of experience in technology solutions
- 5+ years of experience in program or project management
- 5+ years of experience working cross functionally with tech and non-tech teams
- CPA, PMP or similar certification
- Experience defining program requirements and using data and metrics to determine improvement
- Experience in many of the following disciplines is desired: tax compliance and reporting, tax planning, external or internal audit, tax controversy, and technology solutions implementation
- Experience at Amazon or a similarly complex, diverse, dynamic global organization
- Verbal and written communication skills are a must
- High aptitude for technology and a preference for using solutions like Salesforce, Quicksights, PowerBI, etc.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $80,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $172,900/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
