About Aachen

City of monarchs

Geographically, Aachen is the westernmost city in Germany, bordering on the countries of Belgium and The Netherlands. This is also called the tri-border region, with diverse cultural and linguistic influences. Aachen is about an hour drive or train ride away from Cologne, and not far away from Maastricht and Brussels, neighbored by the beautiful hilly landscape and leisure areas of Eifel and Ardennes. Aachen has a long tradition and history. Even though much of the city's historical architecture was destroyed during World War II, there are still a number of buildings dating to the middle ages, including Aachen Cathedral, where Charlemagne's remains are interred, and more than 40 German kings and queens were crowned.

With the RWTH Aachen University, Aachen is the location of one of Europe's leading science and research institutions in Natural Science and Engineering, with more than 45,000 enrolled students who contribute to a lively city life with student charm. The university has a large innovative capacity and drives technology transfer to the business environment in the urban area of Aachen and the tri-border region.
