At AWS Fintech, we're building robust financial data management systems at cloud scale. Our team develops and maintains one of the world's largest finance data warehouses, processing billions of transactions daily that support AWS's continuous growth. As a critical component of AWS's financial ecosystem, our platform enables real-time financial reporting, tax compliance, and strategic planning initiatives that directly impact the future of cloud computing. Our engineering teams leverage an advanced AWS technical stack to deliver efficient, scalable financial solutions, including comprehensive data processing through EMR, Redshift, and Glue, storage solutions with S3 and DynamoDB, real-time streaming via Kinesis, and advanced analytics through QuickSight and Athena. We're enhancing our financial systems with machine learning capabilities using SageMaker, while maintaining enterprise-grade security through KMS, IAM, and CloudTrail.
As a Senior Data Engineer, you'll design and build high-performance solutions that operate at global scale. Your responsibilities will include developing real-time financial data processing pipelines that handle millions of transactions per second, creating automated reconciliation systems for global reporting, and implementing sophisticated data lakes and warehouses for analytics and compliance. You'll build self-service analytics platforms for finance teams, develop ML-powered anomaly detection systems, and support global tax and accounting platforms essential to AWS's operations.
This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of cloud computing and financial technology. You'll process financial data at a scale, making direct impact on decisions that drive AWS's growth. Working alongside experienced engineers and financial experts, you'll implement innovative solutions using the latest AWS technologies. Key job responsibilities
• Lead and design complex data architectures, ensuring scalability, security, and alignment with business objectives
• Drive implementation of large-scale data pipelines and ETL processes using AWS technologies
• Identify and resolve system-wide data challenges, including performance bottlenecks and architectural deficiencies
• Establish data engineering best practices, including governance, security standards, and operational excellence
• Mentor team members and provide technical leadership across multiple projects
• Make strategic build-vs-buy decisions and drive consensus on technical solutions
• Ensure data solutions are auditable, accessible, and maintainable across the organization
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative data solutions
A day in the life
At AWS Fintech, your day combines technical leadership and hands-on development across our global financial systems. Mornings begin with reviewing pi pipeline performance and team standups, followed by collaborating with finance stakeholders on new reporting requirements. You'll lead technical design reviews, optimize complex ETL jobs, and mentor junior engineers throughout the day. Afternoons involve implementing security enhancements and developing ML-powered solutions. Your day concludes with code reviews and ensuring critical data pipelines run efficiently. Working with AWS technologies, you'll make decisions that directly impact AWS's financial operations while collaborating across global teams.
About the team
The AWS FinTech data team builds and manages the core financial infrastructure that powers AWS's global operations. Our mission is to develop and maintain a comprehensive finance data platform that transforms complex financial data management into automated, efficient processes. Working across AWS's ecosystem, we deliver solutions that standardize finance operations from product-level details to regional operations and customer-specific financial data. We collaborate extensively with Finance, Tax, Accounting, AWS Forecasting, Commerce Platform, and Infrastructure teams to build reliable financial systems. Our culture emphasizes data-driven decisions, technical excellence, and cross-team collaboration while maintaining operational excellence.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of data engineering experience
- Experience with data modeling, warehousing and building ETL pipelines
- Experience with SQL
- Experience in at least one modern scripting or programming language, such as Python, Java, Scala, or NodeJS
- Experience mentoring team members on best practices
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with big data technologies such as: Hadoop, Hive, Spark, EMR
- Experience operating large data warehouses

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $139,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $240,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
