For centuries, Warsaw was troubled with shuffling empires: it was pillaged by the Swedes and occupied by the Russians for decades. Finally, in 1918, it had an opportunity to breathe and start to flourish. However, soon afterwards, it came under the rule of Nazi Germany and then went through a difficult period of rebuilding and getting back on its own two feet.
