Business Data Technologies

Building scalable solutions for Amazon’s growing analytics needs

Our mission is to accelerate Amazon’s data-driven business, enable the next generation of analytics and machine learning technologies at scale, and raise the bar on global customer trust by cataloging, protecting, enriching, and brokering all SDO data through its life cycle.

Business Data Technologies (BDT) makes it easier for teams across Amazon to produce, store, catalog, secure, move, and analyze data at a massive scale. Integral to Amazon’s eCommerce Foundation (eCF), the organization responsible for serving millions of customer page views and orders per day, BDT deals in Exabytes (EBs) of data on a daily basis, serving Amazon’s growing analytics needs.

What we do

  • Delivering at scale

We enable teams to share their data from thousands of sources inside and outside Amazon, including the Amazon catalog system, inventory system, customer order system, website page views, and Alexa systems. We also support Amazon subsidiaries, such as IMDB and Audible.

We provide interfaces for our internal customers to access and query data hundreds of thousands of times per day, using Amazon Web Service (AWS) Redshift, Hive, Spark, and Oracle.

  • Delivering for customers

    • We own one of the largest data lakes for Amazon, where teams around the world can search, share, and store exabytes of data in a secure and seamless way. Using our solutions, teams can schedule and process millions of workloads daily.
    • We’re developing innovative products, including the next-generation of data catalog, data discovery engine, and data transformation platform—all with state-of-the-art user experience.
    • We provide enterprise solutions that focus on compliance, security, integrity, and cost efficiency for operating and managing Amazon data.

Jale – Senior Software Engineer

The accomplishment I’m most proud of in the BDT is when we had a major goal to change how permissions and access work for our data lake. It was a fast-evolving program where almost all BDT teams were working toward the same goal and there were many moving parts. Being the technical lead of a small workstream to deliver our part was one of the most fulfilling projects I’ve worked on.
